| When Genji
returned to Sho land, a ceremony was held to
honor his fallen teacher. A small group gathered
at the holy shrine, the scene of Murasaki Tanka's
death. They stood, there, in prayer. Then, they
carried torches through Shoushi to the riverbank.
They dropped blossoms into the river and watched
as they floated out to sea. Basho Genji released
into the current the ring he had given his
teacher years before.
